Homeopathy, traditionally spelt Homoeopathy, was developed over 200 years ago. One of the most well known patrons of Homoeopathy would be the English Royal family, who have had a private homoeopath since the 1830s. Homoeopathy is used widely throughout the world, often being administered by conventional doctors. It has previously had a strong history in Australia and there is renewed interest as Australians seek out alternative treatment to be used alone or in conjunction with Western traditional medicine.
The following includes excerpts taken from the Australian Homoeopathic Association pamphlet explaining what homoeopathy is and what you can expect in a consultation:
'What is Homoeopathy ?
Homoeopathy is a complete system of medicine developed by German physician and chemist, Dr Samuel Hahnemann (1755 - 1843), based on the principle of "like cures like".
Hahnemann found that many substances, when administered to healthy people, could produce symptoms similar to those experienced by sick people. He also found that illnesses could be cured by using small, specially prepared doses of these substances, if prescribed on the basis of similarity of symptoms.
How does Homoeopathy differ from conventional medicine ?
Conventional medicine is based primarily on the concept that diseases are caused by harmful organisms such as bacteria and viruses. Treatment aims to either kill these organisms or to oppose the resulting local symptoms with drugs.
Homoeopathy views many symptoms in its quest to treat underlying tendencies to ill health. Therefore, mental and emotional symptoms play an important part in determining treatment.
It is believed homoeopathic treatment strengthens a person's health, acting as a catalyst, stimulating and directing the body's ability to fight infection as well as resolving any underlying susceptibility to disease.
What does a visit to a Homoeopath involve ?
Initial consultations may take up to an hour or more [1.5hrs to 2hrs is common], however simple acute complaints may only take 15 - 30 minutes. Information relating to current symptoms and past medical history will be required.
Questions may also be asked about diet, sleep, lifestyle, and about some mental and emotional aspects. Physical examinations may be required according to particular complaint.
What type of medicine will be given ?
Homoeopathic medicines are derived from plant, animal, mineral and microbiological sources. They are prepared following strict homoeopathic pharmaceutical guidelines and can be given as liquid or globules. Since the medicines are very dilute [I use mainly 30C which are well past Avogadro's number], they are safe and non-toxic when taken as prescribed by a registered homoeopath.
A single dose or repeated doses of medicine may be given...
Recommendations regarding lifestyle may also be made as it is important to remove obstacles to cure e.g. getting enough sleep or getting work-life balance right.
Are there any sides effects ?
There are no toxic side effects from Homoeopathic medicines...as they are energetic remedies.
Can Homoeopathic medicine be taken with conventional medicines ?
Homeopathic medicines may be taken in conjunction with conventional drugs. Homoeopathic medicines are safe, non-toxic, energetic and do not interfere with drugs. Any advice regarding drugs must be in consultation with your medical practitioner. How to take Homoeoapthic medicines:
The medicine is usually taken away from food or drink, or as directed by your practitioner. Avoid taking the medicine immediately after such substances as tobacco, coffee or toothpaste. Store the medicine away from extreme heat, direct sunlight, electrical (radiation) devices and strong smelling substances such as strong perfumes, mentholated liniments and camphor.' In addition to the above, I practice Homoeopathic Facial Analysis (HFA). HFA helps in narrowing down the remedy by classing individuals within miasms (categories) which reflect the way they respond to their surroundings. Facial features help to make this classification, so I will be taking a series of facial photos to use for this analysis (other options can be discussed). This is an exciting new development in Homoeopathy, developed by Grant Bentley (VCCH), I believe it's the most significant advancement in homoeopathy in decades. To date only a small percentage of homoeopaths have been taught this method and it's something that I can offer you as part of your consultation.
Note: As part of the consultation requires analysis of the case before a remedy can be decided upon and given, I encourage everyone to bring a book (or the like) along to occupy themselves during the analysis period.
